Flowstone inside St. Michael's Cave

photo37.jpg

Lime, dissolved from rain water, is deposited onto the walls by the dripping water in minute amounts, leading the such intricate formations. They take thousands of years to develop and can be halted in a second if you touch the stone. You skin oils waterproof the stone and prevent the lime form being deposited, and the water runs off. This kills the development of more flowstone at that point.
