Jefferson designed his servant's quarters so they would not obstruct his view

Two terraces, shaped like "L"s flank the main house. This allowed for massive expansion of space without detracting from the small but graceful main house, which otherwise would have dominated the hilltop on which it was built. One underground area is designed for servants, kitchens, a brewery and a wine cellar. The other served as carriage house, stables, housing for servants and an ice house. The tin roof of each wing was channeled to conduct rainwater to underground cisterns to be used for washing and cooking.
